ARTSPACE. AIRSPACE.
The Low Wing encompasses my studio with adjoining artspace and the surrounding airspace. The Low Wing was designed with the help of Dirk Yates at Speculative Architecture and incorporates materials salvaged from the existing space and from the demolition of a nearby lowset fibro house. It is situated in Class C airspace (controlled airspace) just north of the 32 Runway at Gold Coast Airport and in close proximity to the Coral Sea. The space sits beneath a quintessentiall fibro-clad beach shack that was built by local Neil Harris in 1963. ‘Low wing’ is a play on words referring to aircraft with wings that sit below the fuselage (think passenger jet like a Boeing 737) and the space as the low wing of the property beneath the primary dwelling.
The Artspace is an extension of my studio and was envisioned as a project space to present ideas and exhibitions, it also houses my aircraft surveillance node which extends into the Airspace tracking within a 300km radius.
The Airspace is surrounded by a dense garden with five native bee hives, a mango tree, Hills Hoist, projection screen for presenting moving image artworks and outdoor seating for guests. The Airspace is home to numerous inhabitants and visitors, as well as plane sightings, which are all recorded in the Airspace Index.
